GUIDELINES
1. Write the story as soon as you gathered the facts
2. Lay up a dominant point (Main Idea)
3. Be accurate (facts, language, words, spelling)
4. Avoid opinion called "editorializing"
5. Use adjectives sparingly
6. Avoid libelous & rebellious matter, prejudice & bad taste
7. Give the source of the NEWS (attribution)
8. Write names in full when first mentioned for the first time
9. Identify the names mentioned
10. Write one idea, one sentence paragraph
11. Choose words with care, consult the dictionary
12. Use familiar words, common or concrete
13. Avoid worthiness
14. Do not use a phrase, clause (shorter word will do, the better)
15. Strike for variety in sentence structure
16. Watch out for errors in grammar
17. Observe the guidelines for clear & effective writing
18. Adopt a paper style sheet or style book for consistency
LEAD
Ask these questions:
1. What was unique or the most important or unusual thing that happened?
2. Who was involved?
3. Who did it?
4. Who said it?
AFTER ANSWERING
Is it a direct or delayed lead? Which is best?
Is there a colorful word or dramatic phrase I can work into the LEAD
What is the subject & what verb will best move the reader into the story?
